2007 Fall Match Play - Championship Flight Results Reported by Andy Peet

"Brian Cofiell and I played our match play final this morning at Pine Ridge.  Kim Hand and the staff were generous in squeezing us in around 7:15 this morning.  Thanks to the terrific staff at Pine Ridge. I won the match 1-up.  It was an exciting match from the start.

Peet takes the lead out of the gate. Cofiell birdies 5 to even the match.  Peet’s ball was lost somewhere in the driving range.  His ball was never to be found.  After a long birdie on 8 and a par on 9, Peet goes to 10 with a 3-up advantage.  After a 2-putt birdie on 12, Peet recaptures his 3-up lead.  Cofiell stripes the fairway on 13 and leaves himself with a 40 foot birdie putt.  Peet’s score on the hole was classified by the Bush Administration.  After trading pars on 14, Cofiell par’s 15 to reduce his deficit to 1-down.  Trading par’s on 16, the 2 competitors go to the all important par 3 17th with a 1-hole difference.  After decent shots to the green, both golfers barely miss birdies and tap in for pars.  Even these short tap-ins were putted.  The tension was a thick as pea soup as both gladiators and good friends approached the 18th tee.  Cofiell hits a towering shot that leaves him 280 from the green.  Peet, after driving the ball poorly all day, stripes a shot to 230 from the green into the teeth of a fierce wind.  Cofiell knowing that he needs birdie to continue the match waits for the green to clear.  He takes a mighty swing at the ball, but even with his impressive strength, he could only get to about 30 yards from the green.  Peet takes out his mighty 5-wood and smacks a shot to the right side of the green, and luckily between the 2 trees.  Cofiell hits his wedge tight to about 8 feet.  Peet plays conservative and stays about 15 feet above the hole.  Peet, the first to putt, drags his putt toward the hole and leave it 2 inches from the cup.  The putt is conceded.  Cofiell know he needs a birdie to continue and takes his time preparing for the putt.  He gets his feet set, takes a couple of practice swings and is ready to make his stroke.  The putt is hit a bit too firmly and slides by the hole on the right.  The match is over and both friends can now relax, or go to the Ravens game."
